Midtown Greenway Pedestrian Bridge

Work has finally begun on the bridge across Hiawatha next to my shop. It's looks like they'll get the pilings in before the ground freezes. This is the last official part (as far as I know) of the Midtown Greenway before the whole thing is finished.

I have heard a rumor (from one of the guys working on the pilings) about a suspension bridge to connect the Greenway across the river to St. Paul, but I can't find any official info about that yet. If that ever happens, maybe St. Paul would be shamed into doing a little more with their paths, but I'm not holding my breath.

Cool! Maybe I'll have to get on my bike some more next spring and ride over for lunch. If they would only build a canoe-canal running parallel to the path I could take a shortcut to the Mississippi and avoid the heavy traffic on M-haha creek

Now that the Marty Olaf Sabo Bridge is nearly complete, what do y'all think?

What was the impression that came into your head when you first saw it while coming down Hiawatha?

Mine were: Hey, what the hell is that?!
Then: They're not going to leave it that way are they?! Then: It looks like a sinking ship!

Is this avante garde public art, or your neighbor's purple house with brown trim?

Albeit, we needed a bike/ped bridge there, I like Martin Sabo and have voted for him every chance I've gottten, and even wish he would have not given up his chair. He deserves a bridge named after him. But how much more did it cost to design this blown over light pole to be strong enough to hold people and bikes than it would have to make a nice gothic, well-engineered bridge with a little class.

This bridge screams, "Hey! Hey! Look at me! I'm kind of falling over here! Uhh, just kidding." Kind of a bad joke in this town. Bridges don't need to scream, IMHO.

What to you think? I have to drive under the dismasted schooner twice a day and I think it sucks.
